This is a post I’d been meaning to write for a while, but I got a little too wrapped up in the whole moving-to-Spain thing.
Over the past few months, I’ve been a featured guest on not one, but two travel podcasts!
Back in May, I met up with my friend and professional mentor Brent Bowen, and his long-time friend Chad Beland. Brent and Chad host a weekly podcast on Wednesdays, aptly named The Hump!
Here’s more about The Hump! in Brent and Chad’s words:
Welcome to The Hump! Podcast … your show about how to get one over in this thing called life. We’re middle-agers more than meandering around the Midwest and beyond. Each episode we share in experiences about how to get one over on this thing called life. We chat with people from all backgrounds, whether they choose to leisurely walk the earth, shoot it from behind a camera or scramble for that next connecting flight. Count on plenty of talk about craft beer (or other beverages of one’s choice), the wonder of perpetual cargo-short living and that next SHINY thing we’re obsessing over ….
During my episode, we talked all things travel. Brent and Chad are also big travelers themselves, so we talked about some of my past experiences and favorite tips. They’d even been considering a trip to Iceland, thanks to Kansas City’s new direct flight to Reykjavik on Icelandair, so I shared my best wisdom given my recent visit last year.
And of course, there was beer involved! (I have to say – every time I meet up with Brent, there usually is.)

Last week, I had the opportunity to once again share my experiences in podcast form. One of my good friends from college, Juan Franco, invited me to be a guest on his podcast, America on Tap. According to Juan, America on Tap is “a weekly podcast discussing the issues affecting my generation, your generation and our neighbor’s generation – all while enjoying a cold beer.”
Juan is originally from Venezuela, and has lived in El Salvador, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and Denmark, as well as the United States, where he is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Florida after living in Missouri for several years. He’s a huge fan of all things America and American politics, but for last week’s episode, he decided to take a different approach: what is it like for Americans who leave the United States to live abroad?
So that’s where I come in. Juan interviewed me, and another of our classmates from Drury University, Megan Dern. Megan is also teaching abroad this year – but in Shanghai, China! I had a lot of fun talking to Juan and Megan, as we compared our experiences of moving to foreign countries. The hardest part of this podcast? Finding a mutually agreeable time to talk. There’s a 12-hour time difference between Orlando and Shanghai, and Madrid is right in the middle, six hours ahead/behind. But we made it work!
And regardless of the time zone, we all cracked open a cold one at the beginning of the show.
